Who needs the six-month training
Connecticut CHRO resources explain that the Time's Up Act created sexual harassment training and education requirements. For employers with three or more employees, new employees hired on or after October 1, 2019 must receive two hours of training within six months of their start date.
For employers with fewer than three employees, the CHRO resource identifies a supervisor-focused training duty.
Can the training be online?
CHRO provides a free online training resource, and its FAQ says an employer may use training of its own choosing as long as it contains the necessary elements.
For employee buyers, the practical issue is acceptance. Ask the employer whether they want the CHRO course specifically or whether they will accept a third-party online certificate.
How to avoid certificate problems
Make sure the certificate shows your name, course title, date, length, and verification details. Then send it through the employer's requested HR or onboarding process.
If the employer has a separate policy acknowledgement, complaint procedure, or reporting channel review, complete that too.
Employer Checklist
- 1Confirm whether your employer has three or more employees.
- 2Complete two hours of training within six months if the rule applies.
- 3Ask whether your employer accepts third-party online certificates.
- 4Save your certificate and send it to the employer's HR process.
- 5Complete any employer policy acknowledgement separately.
