What does OSHA require before operation?
A forklift operator needs training and evaluation before operating a powered industrial truck. Training includes formal instruction, practical training, and evaluation of workplace performance.
Online training can cover the formal instruction portion, but it cannot by itself prove that the operator can safely operate the employer's truck in the employer's workplace.
What is the three-year deadline?
OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator's performance at least once every three years. That date should be tracked like an expiring credential.
Refresher training is also required after certain events, including unsafe operation, accidents or near misses, an evaluation showing unsafe operation, assignment to a different truck type, or changed workplace conditions.
Where National Course Portal fits
The Forklift Theory course can help with formal instruction and documentation. It is useful for employers that want employees to learn core concepts before hands-on evaluation.
Employers must still provide truck-specific practical training and evaluate the operator in the actual workplace.

FAQ
Does forklift certification expire every three years?
OSHA requires operator performance evaluation at least once every three years. Many employers treat that as the renewal cycle for their forklift authorization.
Can forklift training be fully online?
No. Online theory can support formal instruction, but OSHA also requires practical training and workplace performance evaluation.
When is refresher forklift training required?
Refresher training is required after triggers such as unsafe operation, an accident or near miss, a poor evaluation, assignment to a different truck, or changed workplace conditions.
