A curriculum structure prepared for Virginia mature drivers

The base curriculum is used for the initial path and then shortened for the refresher path. That keeps the experience at the shortest allowed timing while preserving clarity for the learner and insurer.

Module 1

Mature driving in Virginia and your insurance discount

50 minutes

Explains the purpose of the course, the Va. Code § 38.2-2217 insurance-discount benefit, the 3-year cycle, and how identity, participation, the exam, and the certificate work.

Module 2

Vision and physical changes

65 minutes

Age-related changes in vision, hearing, reaction time, and flexibility, and practical ways to compensate.

Module 3

Fatigue, medications, and alcohol

65 minutes

How fatigue, over-the-counter and prescription medications, alcohol, and their interactions affect driving, and the precautions to take.

Module 4

Signs, signals, and pavement markings

55 minutes

A refresher on current signs, signal phases, roundabouts, and modern pavement markings.

Module 5

Trip planning, routes, and alternatives

55 minutes

Choosing low-stress times and routes, recognizing when not to drive, and alternatives to driving that protect mobility.

Module 6

Safety belts and occupant protection

60 minutes

Proper safety-belt use and fit, airbags, head restraints, and occupant-protection needs for older drivers.

Module 7

Safe and defensive driving

70 minutes

Following distance, lane positioning, safe passing and turning, freeway merging, prevailing speed, and right-of-way.

Module 8

Gaining decision time, hazards, and completion

60 minutes

Techniques to gain decision time, hazard recognition, work zones, weather and night driving, and the certificate and insurance-discount steps.
